The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Ireland are celebrating this year the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, which were established on 20th December 1961.
On this special day, the Government of Ireland very much welcomes the decision of the Government of Luxembourg to establish a resident Embassy in Dublin, which will open in 2022.
Ireland and Luxembourg already enjoy excellent bilateral relations and good cooperation in areas such as political, economic and cultural issues. Both of our Governments will continue to work to deepen these ties. The opening of a resident Embassy not only underlines the commitment of Luxembourg to further strengthening our links but also marks a point of departure which will give new impetus for a substantial development of our relationship.
Luxembourg and Ireland are also close partners in our European Union, to which we both share a deep commitment. In these challenging times, due to the ongoing health crisis, Luxembourg and Ireland have been able to count on our excellent bilateral relations and close cooperation within the EU, as we work together to tackle the common challenges that we face.
Our collaboration at the European level reflects the shared goals held by the citizens of both our countries. As committed members of the European project, Luxembourg and Ireland support the development of a stronger European Union, based on the common values that form its foundation. Our two countries will continue to work closely together towards this goal, as dynamic, open and reliable partners.
Our countries are equally committed to defending and promoting our shared values of democracy, human rights, the rule of law and effective multilateralism. Ireland’s membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2021-2022 and Luxembourg’s membership of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2022-2024 show that commitment in action.
We strongly believe that nations modest in size can achieve great things through active and collaborative engagement and cooperation. The opening by Luxembourg of its new resident Embassy in Dublin is an important step in continuing this work together. As we look towards the next 60 years of diplomatic relations, we have no doubt the quality and depth of our ties of friendship will only continue to grow.
