Statement by Jean Asselborn following the announcement of the formation of a new government in Israel

"I take note of the political agreement found in Israel on the formation of a new government, which foresees the annexation of part of the West Bank.

I fully subscribe to the statement made on 23 April by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in which he underlines that the European Union does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.

An annexation by Israel of occupied Palestinian territory in the West Bank would constitute a serious violation of international law and would deal a fatal blow to the two-State solution. Such a step could not be accepted by the European Union."
